The Broadsword of Kungfu: The Dao.

Unlike the broadswords designed for modern wushu, the original chinese broadswords were heavy, which is why it is mostly held pretty close to the body and used in close range combat. For this reason it makes sense to combine the broadsword techniques with kicks, but be careful not to lose your balance or leave your self open, if you choose to throw in a kick. Imagine the opponent caries a weapon as well, if not there would be no honour in swinging the dao.

Remember to have fun practising with traditional martial arts weapons, in a modern context that is probably the primary reason for practising with such weapons. If you ever really need to defend your self, it is unlikely that there will be a traditional weapon like the dao in close proximity, luckily anything can be a weapon in the right hands!
